Thoughts on Typography and Layout
Brief
This project required designing and typesetting a printed publication from a set of supplied essays, covering cover design, front matter, body content, and back matter. The brief called for a considered typeface and grid system carried through the entire book, with page layout decisions grounded in legibility, readability, and an understanding of each text’s tone and argument.
Outcome
The result is a 20-page collection gathering four essays on typographic theory and history, from Müller-Brockmann, Lupton, McCoy and Frej, and Heller. Open Sans anchors the body text throughout, while each essay is set in its own display typeface and colourway—a decision made partly to offset the theoretical density of the readings with a more approachable, visually distinct reading experience for each contributor. The cover and closing pages bring these colours together in a set of overlapping circles, tying the collection back into a single visual system.
